ragam kehidupan masyarakat, berkembang sejak ratusan tahun silam.
Kesenian Mendu sendiri telah ada dan berkembang di Kabupaten Natuna
sejak tahun 1870. Pementasan sastra lisan ini mirip dengan pementasan
Lenong di Jakarta yakni membangun komunikasi dengan para penontonnya
dalam alur ceritanya.
Teater rakyat ini mengkombinasikan antara seni tari, seni suara atau
nyanyian dan seni peran atau lakon. Perpaduan gerak dan lagu menjadikan
pentas lebih meriah, terlebih dengan dialog dengan penonton yang
intensif sehingga akan terbangun komunikasi lebih baik.
Pada zamannya pertunjukkan rakyat tersebut memiliki durasi 44 malam,
pementasan hari pertama hingga hari ke empat puluh empat berlangsung
terus. Hanya saja dalam perkembangannya kini pertunjukan dipersingkat
menjadi hanya dua jam saja. Pertunjukkanya dimulai usai Shalat 'Isya
sampai menjelang Shubuh. Pementasannya akan terus menyambung hingga
malam ke 44. Alur ceritanya bermula dari kisah terbuangnya Putri Siti
Mahdewi di tengah hutan yan berada di wilayah Kerajaan Antapura karena
kutukan sihir. Sang Putri terkena kutukan sihir karena menolak untuk
diperistri Raja Lak Semalik.
Dalam perjalanan di tengah hutan, Putri bertemu dengan dua orang pemuda
gagah nan tampan yakni Dewa Mendu dan Angkara Dewa. Kedua pemuda tampan
ini langsung memberikan pertolongannya dengan membebaskan sang Putri
dari kutukan sihir. Namun kedua pemuda terseubt akhirnya berselisih
paham karena masing-masing menyukai Putri Siti Mahdewi.
Bupati Natuna, Drs H Daeng Rusnadi, M.Si bergambar
bersama usai pementasan Kesenian Mendu di Yogyakarta. Hampir seluruh
warga masyarakat Kepulauan Riau yang ada di Yogyakarta dan sekitarnya
memenuhi ruangan Gedung Multipurpose Universsitas Islam Negeri (UIN)
Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.
Kehadiran mereka itu selain untuk menghadiri acara syawalan dan
silaturahmi antar sesama warga Kepulauan Riau yan ada di Yogyakarta dan
sekitarnya, juga bermaksud ingin menyaksikan kesenian langka khas
Kabupaten Natuna, Kepulauan Riau yang dikenal dengan kesenian sastra
lisan Mendu.
Bupati Natuna langsung membawa rombongan pemain dan Muspidanya ke
Yogyakarta. Daeng menjelaskan kesenian Mendu merupakan satu-satunya
kesenian sastra lisan khas daerah Natuna. Jadi di daerah Melayu lain
apalagi di negara lain tidak ada kesenian seperti ini.
"Kesenian Mendu hampir mirip dengan kesenian Lenong yang ada di Jakarta.
Daerah lain di Kepulauan Riau maupun daerah Melayu lainnya tidak
memiliki kesenian langka ini. Termasuk di Negara Melayu lain. Jadi tidak
ada yang bisa mengklaim diri bahwa Kesenian Mendu merupakan kesenian
daerah atau negara lain," tegasnya.
Daeng Rusnadi mengungkapkan para pemain Mendu langsung didatangkan dari
daerah asalnya yakni Kabupaten Natuna. Sebab orang Melayu yang ada di
Yogyakarta tidak ada yang bisa melakonkan adegan dalam kesenian yang
berumur ratusan tahun ini.
Dijelaskannya Kabupaten Natuna merupakan derah kaya akan seumber daya
alam. Kabupaten ini merupakan daerah terluar dari Provinsi Kepulauan
Riau yang langsung berbatasan dengan Vietnam Utara.
